Our Victorian sea captain's home was built in 1871 by Captain Freeman Atkins Snow (born Nov. 7, 1838) for less than $4,000.00. Captain Snow put to sea at the age of 10, as did eight of his nine brothers, and became a captain ("Master") in 1862. Upon his retirement from this exciting but dangerous life, "Captain Free" as he was known to his friends, settled back in Wellfleet, built the house, married and became an agent for the Commercial Wharf Company. He also flew signal flags for the U.S. Weather Bureau in his front yard. To our knowledge Captain Snow had only one child, a daughter.
A private residence for over a hundred years, the house has been operated as a Bed & Breakfast since the late 1980's. In November of 1999 the house was purchased by the current owners, Adam Levinson and Janet Loewenstein, who renovated and redecorated the house with both modern conveniences and old-fashioned charm.
Situated on a large landscaped lot in Wellfleet's Central District, the Stone Lion Inn is ideally located for walking to restaurants, galleries and the harbor. Ocean beaches, peaceful ponds and wooded paths are just a short drive away.
